Vest Dressed

Add a new layer to your fashion arsenal...

vestThe secret to being a sharp dressed man? It’s all about standing out in a crowd of standard issue “jeansandtees” and suits. It pays to take a risk, and sometimes that risk is actually a menswear classic that has fallen by the wayside: the vest.

The vest (or waistcoat for the proud dandies out there) has been around since man first put thread to fabric, but banish visions of 70s leisure suits and the cast of Deadwood from your mind. Take a chance on this season’s modern versions of this oldie but goodie.

Dapper men about town like Johnny Depp and David Beckham take on the tailored style in unconventional ways, subbing these pieces for your standard sport coat. Layer a dressier version over a casual shirt for a similarly sexy but fashion forward look. For a more classic approach, give your go-to two-piece a break and check out a smashing 3-piece suit. Go for slim-cut styles to keep it contemporary.

Whether adopting a full-on suit or mixing up separates, look for unique details that make the vest your own. Texture and subtle patterns like pinstripes, are sharp and versatile options for dressing up or down. Contrasting or brass buttons add a cool military vibe. Play around with fabrics, and the number of buttons, and you’re sure to find a look that suits your style.
